How ambulances work in Cozumel

If you are in an accident or have some kind of medical emergency on Cozumel, call 911 or have someone call 911 for you. That emergency response number will dispatch an ambulance to your location. Most likely, other ambulances will hear the call and go to the scene as well.

The reason that can happen is that the ambulances are owned and operated by local, for-profit hospitals (plus the Mexican Red Cross) and they all want your business.

HOWEVER, you have the right to tell whichever ambulance you choose to take you directly to any hospital that you want them to take you to, regardless of which hospital operates the ambulance you use, because the city government requires them to take you whichever hospital you want. If you are a resident of Cozumel, this ambulance service is free of charge.  If you are a non-resident, ask the price first; each ambulance company has a different price for non-residents, ranging from 200usd to 2,000usd or more.
